The events unfold in 1963. Convicted Randall McMurphy (Jack Nicholson) arrives at the psychiatric hospital for examination. The freedom-loving prisoner is outraged by the strict rules set by Mildred Retched, a senior nurse in the ward (Louise Fletcher). Not following her instructions is the best option for McMurphy, because it's both fair and fun. He teaches the same to the rest of the residents of the mental hospital.

Most of the scenes were filmed in one of Oregon's mental hospitals. The actors got used to their roles, conducting rehearsals in the company of the mentally ill. Real patients and doctors were involved in the massacre. It is the second film in the history of cinema to win an Oscar in the five most prestigious categories - Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Director and Best Screenplay. The film received a similar "five" awards in the Golden Globe nominations.
