Events unfold in Normandy in the fourteenth century, during the reign of King Charles VI. Knight Jean de Carrouge (Matt Damon) returns from the war and learns that while he was away from home, his wife Margarita was raped by his neighbor and longtime adversary Jacques Le Grey (Ben Affleck). No one believes the woman's testimony, so Jean turns to the king for help. Carl says the dispute needs to be resolved in a duel. The winner will be recognized as right. But in the event of Jacques' loss, his wife must be burned at the stake for false testimony.

The drama «The Last Duel» is a film adaptation of Eric Jagger's novel of the same name. The book, based on real events, was published in 2005. According to historians, the duel was the last legal duel in France. Nicole Holofsener and starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon co-wrote the screenplay for the upcoming film.
